Windows to the Soul

s.a.w. stands for “Someone’s Always Watching”. One look at s.a.w.’s work will confirm that sentiment. In the artist’s words: “Becoming an artist is always a difficult journey because there’s that constant feeling of people wanting more or waiting to see what comes next.”

There’s a voyeuristic pressure to these pieces, for sure, but there’s also an earnesty, something private and expressive at the same time.

It stands to reason that eyes are the heart and soul of s.a.w.’s paintings. They communicate not only a connection to the ‘other’ but to s.a.w. themself. The paintings have a personality and voice that jump off of the canvas, as though we weren’t looking at a depiction but a reflection. What if we were suddenly able to see ourselves in everything?

s.a.w. paints beautifully complex beings and creatures who evoke the notion that all people are leads in their own respective stories. Eyes convey that message, perhaps in suggesting that if we could only gaze into them that we would better empathize with those around us.
