"LiSTEN WHiLE ALONE" by GUiLT
GUiLT is an artist from Oak Park, IL currently living in Chicago. He studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
"LiSTEN WHiLE ALONE" is not a pleasant listen. The project by Art Institute of Chicago student Eric Charles Mayer works in reaction to what he sees as a clean, contented aesthetic that has spread throughout music, the arts, and culture as a whole.
Mayer’s music works in abstract, experimental, ambient, and noisy spaces. Building off of field recordings, samples, live instrumentation, textures, and noisethe music is often foreboding, deliberately off-putting too.
Despite this, or perhaps because of it, it draws you in to its deep gulfs. GUiLT asks you to look beyond the traditional drums-strings-vocals dynamics of contemporary music and seek something more emotional, conflicted and deep.
Mayer told us his music is supposed to highlight the bad and the ugly, so the listener can leave it with a new focus on the good, a positivity and a relief.
Still, listening to it, between the abrasion and malice, you can find something beautiful.
